Katie Baynes holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Grand Valley State University, a Master's Degree in Music Education from The American Band College of Central Washington University, and is currently Director of Bands at Newaygo Public Schools in Newaygo, MI. Before teaching at Newaygo, Ms. Baynes was the Director of Percussion at Pace High School in Brownsville, TX. A passion for percussion performance led her to compete with Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps in 2010, and with NorthCoast Academy Percussion Ensemble in 2011 and 2012. Additionally, Ms. Baynes taught at Redline Percussion for their 2015 competitive season. In addition to conducting the 6th, 7th, 8th and High School Symphonic Bands at Newaygo, Ms. Baynes instructs the Newaygo Jazz Band, Newaygo Pep Band, and Newaygo High School Marching Band. Ms. Baynes’ bands have consistently received 1st Division ratings at both District and State Band Festival, and the Newaygo Marching Band placed 2nd in the state at MCBA State Finals under her direction in 2016 and 2017. In her free time, Ms. Baynes enjoys boating, snow skiing, and performing with the Grand Rapids Symphonic Band. Next summer, Ms. Baynes will again be traveling to seven European Countries as a staff member for The Michigan Ambassadors of Music.
Assistant Band Director - Branden Listh
Branden Listh holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Alma College, and is currently the Assistant Director of Bands and the new Choir Director at Newaygo Public Schools. He started teaching at Newaygo in the fall of 2015. Prior to that, Mr. Listh student taught at Walled Lake Central High School in Walled Lake, MI, working with their Flight 1 Marching Band and AAA ranked school during their 2014 competitive marching and concert season. A passion for trombone performance led him to perform as the principal trombone player in Alma’s Kiltie Marching band, Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his collegiate career he performed many recitals and solo performances, including a spotlight performance with the Hillsdale Wind Symphony during the summer of 2013. In addition to being the Assistant Director of the marching program he conducts the 6th and 7th grade brass, teaches 5th grade general music and will be introducing a new high school Choir class during the 2017 school year. Outside the classroom, Mr. Listh coaches the Newaygo Shot Put and Discus Throwers during the spring Track and Field season. He also enjoys traveling, camping, hiking and a good puzzle. Mr. Listh plans to continue his education to receive his Masters degree in this upcoming summer.
